Winter is among us, meaning nights are getting darker, mornings are getting harder and the weather is much much colder. Motivation is something that won’t come to you as easily during these times. This is why you will hear a lot of people say that discipline should overrule motivation. It’s true. Here are some tips that can help you stay on track with your fitness goals during the winter months.

REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED

When you start to lack motivation, the reasons why you started on this journey can get lost in the bigger picture. So, keeping in mind why you started is key to keeping the motivation levels up.

PLAN AHEAD

Planning is an essential way of practising discipline. If you plan your workouts or plan what you’re going to eat throughout the week, you are much more likely to stay on track and commit. For example, plan what days and what time you’re going to head to the gym. Plan when you’re going to go on your run. Check the weather, if it’s awful, plan to do 5k on the treadmill. Even go as far as laying out your gym outfit in the morning so it’s one less thing to think about. Or, prepare your meals so they’re ready to eat. Small things like this can make a huge difference.

WORKOUT WITH A PARTNER

Working out with a friend will hold you accountable. Not only in the sense that it gives you another reason to show up, but they’ll be there to push you that little bit harder throughout your workout, whether that be in a gym session, in a class, or on a run. Not only does it help with accountability, but it also makes the process a lot more enjoyable.

If you’re wanting to go the extra mile… why not get a coach to really keep you accountable 😉

GET OUTSIDE

Whilst going outside can seem unappealing in the winter months. Getting outside will really help improve your mood and make you feel more motivated. Being out in sunlight actually increases the release of serotonin, your body’s feel good hormone. Even if it’s a walk on your lunch break, parking your car further away at the gym, or walking the dog, every little bit helps.

SIGN UP TO A CLASS

This could be a great way to keep your fitness levels up in the winter. If you book a class, it’s more likely that you’re going to actually go. Classes are fun! You can meet new people and try new things, like CrossFit, Yoga or Pilates.

If you’re struggling with motivation this winter, you can book a call to chat with one out coaches to see how they can help you stay on track.
